The Challenge
Gastown Coffee Co. had outgrown its original Squarespace site. The brand was inconsistent across packaging, social, and web, and the e-commerce experience was fragmented — wholesale customers and retail customers were managed in two different systems. They needed a unified brand and a single platform that could serve both audiences without compromising on either.
Our Approach
We started with a brand audit and refreshed identity system — wordmark, colour palette, packaging system, and editorial typography. The new site was built as a headless commerce experience with Shopify on the back end and Next.js on the front, allowing pixel-level design control while keeping inventory, payments, and fulfilment on a proven platform. Wholesale customers get a gated portal with custom pricing; retail customers get a clean storefront with subscription support.
The Outcome
Average order value rose meaningfully after launch, and the subscription program — which didn't previously exist — now accounts for a steady recurring revenue stream. Local SEO investment paid off quickly: the brand now ranks in the Local Pack for several Vancouver coffee-related queries.
